Naval Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a veteran of the Mexican War, convinced Secretary of War Jefferson Davis to authorize formation of the Camel Military Corps in 1853. With $30,000, 77 camels and two camel drivers were imported from the Middle East. They traveled to Arizona from Texas under direction of two Egyptian camel drivers nicknamed Greek George and Hi Jolly. The camels went berserk around the Calvary horses and were released after the Civil War. Hi Jolly eventually took up prospecting and died a pauper. His grave and monument is in Quartzite.
Quartzsite had a little over 4 million visitor nights for 2005, second in Arizona only to Sedona, and features many other points of interest, including Petroglyphs, Indian grinding holes, and an Intaglio, among others.
